LESSONS FROM POST-PRODUCTION

We're waist deep in post production now and things are moving along quite well. Not to say that all is well, but the reality is that I'd be a little concerned if there weren't any issues. Figuring out what does and doesn't work has been a bevy of discoveries, the most interesting being how hard it is to make math not suck. Maybe it's the nature of the material, that it's just easier to come up with entertaining associations for the reading/essay sections. Maybe those of us creating the content simply aren't that good at math?  While I will make no personal claims of mathematical savvy, any attempt at debunking the math prowess of some of our writers is a frivolous exercise. No, I'm quite convinced that math education is innately analytical and quantitative, and hence more boring to capture on video.

However, if one is mindful, experience leads to wisdom, right? We're noticing that episode 6 ("The Geometry Equation") is shaping up to be our most engaging and effective attempt at teaching math thus far. Perhaps the fast pacing and fight sequences make math concepts land like blows from a hardback geometry textbook. Maybe it's the shaky camera movements and stylized color timing that lock in and submit your attention better than a Locoplata choke-hold. Or maybe it's that everything in life is more awesome when figuratively depicted as an action flick. It's not for me to decide why, but rather garner a lesson learned for the next round: math + action = good.
